Associated with the Lahj region of southwest Yemen, this genre developed alongside the Yemeni muwashah (Sana’ani) color, becoming famous with the poet and artist Ahmed Fadl al-Abdali, who died in 1943. Al-Abdali, who was a prince in the Sultanate of Lahj, is almost synonymous with the Lahji color. He formed an artistic duo with the artist Fadl Al-Lahji, distinguished by a delicate artistic sense, who made musical introductions to many of the songs composed by Al-Abdali, who was nicknamed Al-Qumandan (the Commandant).

With the spread of Indian and Egyptian music records in the 1940s, Al-Qumandan feared that the local colors would disappear. So he worked on developing Lahji songs by introducing new refrains and muwashah and adding musical instruments that helped it spread throughout all of Yemen and Gulf countries. This color is light in movement and fast in dancing rhythms which characterize the region, and its roots go back to the songs associated with harvesting and other social occasions in the area.

The most important artists of this genre include Fadl Mater, Al-Ameer al-Qamandan, Fadl al-Lahji, Muhammad Saad al-San’ani, Muhammad Saad al-Lahji, the poet Mohsen bin Saleh Mahdi, the composer Salah Nasser Kurd, Abdullah Hadi Sbeit and Saleh Nasib, Abdo Abdul Karim as composer and poet, Hassan Affandi as composer, Faisal Alawi, Saudi Ahmed Saleh, Abdel Karim Tawfiq, Mohammed Saleh Hamdoun and Ahmed al-Zubaidi.
