Yemen’s current political landscape is a mix of new, existing and rebranded groups competing for power in the tumultuous period following the Arab Spring uprisings that drove former President Saleh from power in 2011. The political scene continues to evolve, as alliances form and reform in reaction to major events and opportunities. For example, Saleh fought the Houthis in six wars between 2004 and 2010, before allying with the group to seize control of Sana’a in a military coup in 2014. The Houthis then killed Saleh in December 2017, after he signaled plans to support the Saudi-led coalition.
