Archaeological Site Name: Temple of Almaqah, Baal Awwam temple (Maharram Bilqis)

Date:  Before 1500 BCE.

Location and Importance:

It is the uniting temple of the tribes and peoples constituting the alliance of the state and civilization of Sheba, and it is the seat of the god “Almaqah.”In Marib governorate, its location spans an area of 5,107.80 square meters, and is about 5 km to the southeast of Marib City. 

Components:

A huge complex of architectural units and joint buildingsthe temple is surrounded by an oval-shaped wall. The entrance to the main hall - a rectangular shape with pillars. The long axis of the wall swings and leads to the  granite temple of Harunum (now Solomon Mosque) through a sacred road, which constitutes a part of the main ancient pilgrimage. The temple continued to exercise its function without interruption until the fifth century AD.

Explorations

The study began in the scientific research of the temple by the General Organization for the Study of Man, during an excavation period from December 1951 to February 1952 AD. About 317 inscriptions were discovered. Several excavations have been carried out
