Location: 50 kilometers northwest of the capital of Sana'a.
Origins: The oldest transcripts mentioning Thula date to between the fourth and seventh centuries BC.
History: Thula is one of the archaeological sites dating back to pre-Islamic times, as recent archaeological excavations have shown. It is a fortified city containing much archaeological evidence such as rocky ponds, drinking water channels, rainwater collection and drainage systems, stone tombs, and other old structures.
The city was used as a fortress of military resistance, and played an important role in the wars against the Ottoman occupation. Thula is one of five cities among the tentative World Heritage Sites in Yemen on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
